I am amazed that I don't find a discussion on this.

There is a new contributed module for ISO-3166 country codes (http://drupal.org/project/countries_api). Why is something like this not in core? It should be at the least an optional core module.

Absolutely,

being able to select a country and show it's flag should be a basic option for user profiles.

Does anyone know a simple workaround at the moment?
