The documentation does say a schema is required, but some time could be saved by at least logging that it has silently quit.

$table: The name of the table. If not given, the schema of all tables is returned.

You could test this with drush eval 'print_r(drupal_get_schema()); ' It return FALSE if you pass a schema name that does not exist drush eval 'var_dump(drupal_get_schema('foo')); '
