Drupal 5.1 allows spaces in username

I am using Drupal 5.1, and I just noticed when you go to /user/*/edit, under the description for Username it says, "Your preferred username; punctuation is not allowed except for periods, hyphens, and underscores." yet you can have spaces in the name.

Is that a typo, or intended functionality to discourage the use of spaces?
