The solution we had outlined was like:
- Marking the variables that may use translation for the settings pages.
- Add some 'translate' link for each of this variables that would show expanded fields with the values for each language

gábor hojtsyThis is a dead end. Following the Drupal 8 configuration management initiative instead since they are redoing all of the configuration backend anyway. It is going to be fixed in other ways, so not marking won't fix.
