Please consider extending the Node Access System so that modules can allow or deny viewing, viewing comments, and posting comment independently for nodes under their control to users otherwise permitted to do these things.

My particular app needed the functionality described here, which I could only achieve by hacking comment.module (resulting in it becoming inelegantly coupled with Organic Groups).

D7 allows for grants to be altered and so individual modules to have fine grant control over node display.
