that error should be handled, i reported it because its not handled by drupal and a white screen of death had shown.

That most likely means that you don't have the pdo_mysql extension compiled in.

This will be caught during the installation process (the mysql option will not be presented), but not (by design) during runtime if you have set your settings.php file yourself.
