I am wondering if there is a module / way to have a node assigned to a role by the user creating the node (or by an administrator reviewing the node). What I would like is that when you create the node, there would be a checkbox for each role or a dropdown list containing each role. The roles available to the user would be based on the roles the user have been assigned to.
I tried using taxonomy and taxonomy access control, which works to a point (vocab=role, terms=everyone, User, Friends, Family). However, I also have a keyword vocab (things like News, Events, Stories, Humor, Wedding, etc.) that I give everyone access which results in a user with role User can see nodes from role Friends because they have access to the keyword vocab.

scroogie commentedHave a look at the modules Node Privacy by Role (http://drupal.org/project/node_privacy_byrole) and Node Access (http://drupal.org/project/nodeaccess).

JHDYCompany commentedI have looked at both, but neither are a solution when using drupal 5.0; plus, nodeaccess is "beta quality".
I have also tried using (with TAC) the create/list without view (I) for Keyword and View,Create,List for the roles.
Just not sure how / what to use to setup what I need.

JHDYCompany commentedThink I came up with my solution.
Two vocabularies: Keyword and Access.
Keyword has TAC with only CREATE and LIST checked, other three permissions are I (these are also set as defaults).
Access has TAC with each term VIEW, CREATE and LIST under only 1 role.
Seems to work as I wanted.
Did make it tough on the pathauto, but got that to work by making sure Keyword has "lighter" than Access and messing with pathauto's setup.
Still not perfect . . . best solution is one without TAC, only 1 vocabulary, "built-in" to the node creation process (like being able to set publishing options or author).
