A user role has been created and the "select different theme" and "administer administration pages" have been enabled for it, but "administer site configuration" is disabled.

Users within the role cannot select a theme for the site. It does not appear under "site building", and access is denied if trying to visit the URL of the theme selection page.

Users can only select a theme when "administer site configuration" is enabled. It makes no difference whether or not "select different theme" is enabled, making this option redundant.

Apologies if this issue has already been reported, I couldn't find it in a search.

  • If an user as "select different theme" permission, he can change his theme (if several ones are enabled).
  • The permission to change the default theme of the site is a different thing.
    I think it is normal to allow this only if this user as "administer site configuration" permission.

Thanks for that clarification, I understand now. It is disappointing that it is impossible to give a user the ability to change the theme of a site without giving them access to many confusing configuration options that are not required by someone merely changing the look of a site.

I will make a new issue as a feature request to allow this, and I have changed the status of this issue.

It is possible to give a user the ability to change the theme of a site (for him, not for all users). Just give him the permission "select different theme", and he can change his theme on the page "My account > Edit > Theme configuration".

Don't confuse this with the page where an admin can change the default theme (Admin > Themes).

Yes I understood what you were saying - sorry I didn't make it clear.

The "users" I am talking about in my situation are in fact the site owners/builders/designers, so need to be able to select the default theme. I have created a separate issue here (http://drupal.org/node/106653) as a feature request for some future version.
