I am using drupal 6.20. When i try to login from my login page, i get the following text displayed in a small resizable box on the top left corner of the screen.

When i refresh this page, i am correctly redirected to my accounts page.

Similarly when i try, to register a new account from the register page, i get the following text displayed in the same box on hte top left corner.

What is causing this error and how should i resolve it?

It looks to me like your theme is converting $messages into JSON format. I would search your theme code for json_encode and see if that turns up anything interesting.
