I am trying to add the footnotes ckeditor addon: http://ckeditor.com/addon/footnotes. I followed the directions on the site but it's still not working and button doesn't show in the ckeditor editor appearance page. How can I make it work?

Just a quick look at why the CKEditor Footnotes addon might not work in Commons; Footnotes requires CKeditor version 4.4 and Commons is currently released with CKeditor version 4.3.

You might make a request for Drupal Commons to update the CKEditor library to CKEditor 4.4.4

Can I update it myself by replacing the library folder with the newest version?

Actually on the page it says it will work with ck editor version 4.3. http://ckeditor.com/addon/footnotes
