I am making a new site, using 7.x-3.x-dev for now, intending to deploy with Commons 3.3. Due to media issues described in https://drupal.org/node/1867524 I am inclined to disable "Commons WYSIWYG" and instead go with module WYSIWYG (and downgrade from CKEditor 4 to 3.6).

I have just done this on my test site, and so far my biggest observation is that I can finally embed videos :-)

However, I fear I am missing the larger point of the Commons WYSIWYG project. Can someone please let me know what I lose with the WYSIWYG exchange I have just described? Thanks a bunch.

Correction: I still can't embed videos even after the WYSIWYG exchange described above. I seem closer, though, since the media embed button produces a media popup with working "Web" tab that takes Youtube URLs. After I submit the video for embedding, however, it turns into an image.

Before with "Commons WYSIWYG" the media popup had no tabs at all, just one text box asking for an embed code, which never did anything.

Also, if I do away with Commons and go plain D7, I can embed YouTube videos into the site. I guess that ties back to media issues of Commons per https://drupal.org/node/1867524

There shouldn't be any issues with disabling Commons WYSIWYG and going with the WYSIWYG module. Since it looks like CKEditor (the client-side editor used by Commons WYSIWYG) will be integrating with Media at some point (see #1867524: [meta] Better media handling capabilities) so you should be able to simply disable WYSIWYG and re-enable the Commons WYSIWYG module.

As for now, Commons WYSIWYG mostly functions to ensure that some basic text formats, CKEditor profiles and user permissions exist with some minimal configuration.

In my own testing of Media with Commons, I haven't run into any Commons-specific issues. You might want to check to make sure that you've got Media: YouTube configured properly. I'd also suggest using the oEmbed module for handling external media over single provider modules like Media: YouTube.
