Inconsistent display of the search block

Using the commons Origins theme there seems to be an issue with the search block; the magnifying glass icon does not display and the drop down list is not viewable as it appears to be displaying in white font in both the home and events page. However, the drop down list is visible on the group’s page as it is in black font.

Any ideas what is causing that?
