For anonymous and authenticated users.

The main goal of the frontpage is to quickly orient users to relevant content on the site.

For anonymous users, it's harder to say what's relevant, but we can show content that's generally interesting on the site as measured by Radioactivity (taking into account factors such as +1's and # of comments over time). We want to also present a call to action to join the site.

For authenticated users, we can also show activity from the user's activity stream, which includes other people and threads they are following, as well as activity in their groups .

This needs design (and brainstorming as part of that process).

As a community member and site builder I would like that we try to go with mobile first philosophy in mind e.g. as simple as possible user interface.

From my point of view, home page is the most important interface, because it will be the first thing to open for most users, despite they are authenticated or anonymous, and the first one that they will back to if they arrive at site from e.g. mail notification.

Therefore I would like to suggest focus on the following elements:

  1. Search
  2. Site navigation - main menu
  3. Content creation - #1558320: Design the content creation controls
  4. Activity stream - #1551890: Design the Activity interface ?

Whaddaya think? :)

Aha, above points are for authenticated users, but, for anonymous we could:

  1. Keep search
  2. Keep site navigation
  3. Switch Content creation area / region with a call to action to join the site.
  4. Keep the same structure / design of Activity stream with just another content suited for anonymous users.

Almost cries out for panels with changed content per role. :)

Speaking of panels, the video under Spark about panelizer for responsive design was realllllly slick.

My opinion (I am a novice): for authenticated users, there should be two options for the front page, (1) 'activity stream' (existing) and (2) 'profile' with 'about' as default. Currently admin/settings/site-information shows only activity stream option.
