Type in a search and category_get_tree gets called which builds a tree of all categories and then category_get_category is called repeatedly to load all categories

I cannot understand why this would be required on the search results page, it does not happen on regular pages or node pages

This would not be an issue with a few categories but I have 5,000

I believe this has something to do with the taxonomy wrapper (which I need)

This is over 3 years old issue, for now unsupported version (4.7.x).

I don't see such problems with current code (which I believe I would, given the size of my production site that runs Category). And I also believe, that any possible performance impact is minimized by now introduced caching mechanism, which avoids the tree (or other data) being built anew each time. (See also #501378: PERFORMANCE! Central caching for category API functions).

So closing this one - feel free to re-open, if the problem still stands in 6.x
