One of the things I like about BOOKS is that you can create BOOKS as Primary Links displayed in the header of a page. Each book as several Pages. When you click on the BOOK NAME menu, that book's pages appear in the Left sidebar. This means that the left menu changes depending on the Primary Link menu item, BOOK, selected.
I don't see how to make cateogies behave the same way. If the container is a primary link in the header, clicking on it displays the content with navigation embedded, but no separate navigation in the left column. Maybe with the outline and the embedded links in the content of the container, no one else wants this feature.

Jaza commentedThis is actually quite easy to do, if you know about a little trick in Drupal's menu module, called 'menu shortcuts'. All you have to do is create all your containers and categories, letting category_menu automatically create the corresponding menu items for you (which, if they're being generated in the 'navigation' menu, will appear in a block on your site).
Then, go to 'administer -> menus' on your site, click the 'add menu item' link, and enter the title and path of one of your top-level containers (or categories) that's already been created. Make the menu item's parent 'Primary Links'. When you create this new menu item, it will behave as a 'shortcut'. This means that when you click it, it will take you to the same page as the real menu item does, in the 'Navigation' block. But the real menu item and all its children are still in a block on the side.
Pretty cool, eh?
