I was surprised to find that, following installation of the Category module and construction of a list of categories, all of my forum topics disappeared. The posts remain, and show up on my "recent forum posts" block, but the forum menu item now results in a "no forums defined" page.

Does mean that Forums and Categories cannot coexist as methods for accessing content? If so, this should be explicitly stated early in the introduction to the Category module. If not, then what have I done wrong to make my forum setup disappear, and can it be retrieved?

I found that uninstalling the "taxonomy wrapper" restored the forum. Perhaps if the installation instructions, which seemed to recommend installing the TW, included some explanation of the consequences, it would be helpful to people like myself, who have no clue what a "taxonomy wrapper" does.

No shade on anyone for this, I'm lovin' it all...

Forums rely upon the taxonomy module. Categories, I believe, replaces the taxonomy module. I suspect that forums created under the old taxonomy may not be compatible with the new Categories. New forums are probably fine...

Well, I'm lost now. I managed to inadvertantly convert my forum topics into categories, and had to manually recreate new forum topics. But, I am unable to post anything to a forum.
Again, it is looking like forums can't exist in parallel with categories.

My whole purpose in installing Categories was to allow a block granting access to post by topic. I don't want to organize the whole site around category, but rather around function. Is there a way to get a block listing of topics without the Category module?

Feeling very newbiean. :-(

Thanks, danbh, for your helpful post.

I found another thread (http://drupal.org/node/84180) describing a similar problem, but not quite the same. Here are the relevant characteristics that I can identify:

- I have disabled all categories modules.

- My block "Active Forum Topics" shows new posts to the forum, but they don't show up on the forum topic listing (?q=forum).

- administer/forum shows my forum list as expected, but the post counts in the forum topic listing all remain at 0.

- admister/categories showed no forum vocabulary, so I added one, per the 81480 thread (above). I tried making the SQL changes requested, but am not certain i did that properly. PHPmyadmin allows me to view the tables, but change only a "default" value. I did set the default for vid in both vocab tables to the same id I obtained with the php snippet:

<?php
$vid = _forum_get_vid();
print 'This is the result from _forum_get_vid() ' . $vid;
$vid = variable_get('forum_nav_vocabulary', '');
print '<br>This is the result from variable_get(forum_nav_vocabulary, ) ' . $vid;
?>

..this, however, didn't help

- I tried manually adding a vocab term to the forum vocabulary. This term now shows up as a "Forums" selector option when I create a new forum topic, but the created item appears only in my "Active Forum Topics" list, and not in any other forum listing or tally. Strangely, the manually created forum vocab term does NOT show up in the forum listing. I'm confused about the relationship between the forum vocabulary and forums.

Thanks in advance for all help.

So my forum counts remain at 0 and don't show up under ?q=forum.

I found the problem, in my use of PHPmyadmin. I needed to select "browse" rather than "structure" in the tabbed options. Doing so, I was able to make the vocabulary changes recommended by SomebodySysop, which indeed worked. Thank you, SS!

This problem seems to be repeated a lot around here.

Marking this as "duplicate" to help cleaning the Issue queue a bit.
