APEX Creative is a portfolio and case-study subtheme for design studios, agencies, creative practices, production teams, and independent professionals using APEX.
Its high-contrast monochrome system, acid-lime accent, oversized display typography, monospace details, and five Single Directory Components put work, process, and project credit at the center.
Portfolio-first presentation
The theme uses a compact display line height, a 60-character reading measure, generous full-width presentation, and responsive visual variants. It inherits APEX Theme's 28-region composition and adds Creative-specific classes without forking the parent layout.
Archivo, Space Mono, and fallback stacks are declared but font files are not bundled. Supply licensed fonts or use available system fallbacks, and account for loading performance.
Five Creative components
- Work card: a whole-card project destination with lazy image, client, up to three tags, year, square, landscape, portrait, and ultra-wide ratios, plus a featured state.
- Case-study hero: eager, high-priority full-width media with project, client, year, up to four services, summary, and an accessible content jump.
- Process strip: up to six automatically numbered project steps with titles, descriptions, optional durations, and responsive one-, two-, or three-column layouts.
- Credits block: semantic role-and-name pairs supporting multiple linked or unlinked contributors per role.
- Statement: an oversized manifesto or positioning block with optional eyebrow, exact-phrase emphasis, destination, and inverted presentation.
The component styles adapt media ratios and process columns to their context. Visible focus, reduced-motion, high-contrast, forced-color, and print adaptations preserve usability when the expressive hover, image, and scroll treatments are unavailable.
The components do not create portfolio entities, generate case studies, verify credits, obtain client approval, provide image optimization, or build filters and project archives. They render content and media supplied by the site.
Current installation scope
The package ships three base stylesheets, two page wrappers, one settings override, five SDCs, eight standard optional block placements, and all 28 APEX regions. The wrappers add theme and front-page identity classes before including the parent page template.
The planned portfolio index, case-study, and service landing templates and demo content are not present. The front-page wrapper documents a bold portfolio concept but does not place the components or construct an asymmetric work grid.
Portfolio implementation guidance
- Model projects, services, disciplines, roles, collaborators, dates, outcomes, and approved media.
- Obtain client permission for names, logos, screenshots, metrics, and confidential work.
- Provide accurate credits and destinations for collaborators.
- Create responsive image styles and define focal-point or crop rules for each aspect ratio.
- Keep effects subordinate to content and provide reduced-motion behavior for every added animation.
- Configure project aliases, canonical URLs, metadata, redirects, internal portfolio navigation, structured data, and sitemaps separately.
Requirements and installation
- Drupal 11.3 or later within Drupal 11
- PHP 8.3 or later
- APEX Theme and its declared module stack
composer require 'drupal/apex_creative:^1.0' drush theme:enable apex_creative drush config:set system.theme default apex_creative -y drush cr
Accessibility, performance, and SEO
The styles include reduced-motion, contrast, forced-colors, and print accommodations. Test real pages for keyboard access, focus, heading order, image alternatives, link purpose, contrast, zoom, reflow, text over media, animation, and assistive-technology output.
Large portfolio imagery can harm performance and discovery when it lacks dimensions, responsive derivatives, meaningful alternatives, captions, or surrounding text. Search visibility depends on original project narratives, accurate roles and outcomes, descriptive titles and links, stable URLs, metadata, internal navigation, structured data, and measured media performance.
