I installed the module and enabled the permission for anon users to access the form, however when I try to browse to the url for contact_form as anon user or auth user it doesn't work :(

try one of these URLs:

http://www.your-website.com/contact_form/1 (for user 1)
http://www.your-website.com/user/1/contact_form (for user 1)

and report what happens …

Same here, trying the links takes me in both cases to my admin contact form, see attached. No anonymous access to other users forms though
