I installed Amazon Tools 4.6 on Drupal 4.6.3, created the database tables, configured all access settings, and when I click amazon tools import, no matter what input I give to the form, the php script always dies with no output. Environment: Drupal 4.6.3, PHP 5.0.3, MySQL 4.1.9, Apache 1.3, GNU/Linux.

Prometheus6 commentedMy laptop with the PHP5 setup died. It's going to take a day or two for me to look at this.
nsk commentedI am sorry to hear about your laptop. My webserver, my home PC and my laptop all have php5 installed, so I can run any test you like if you want.
Prometheus6 commentedOkay, I forgot my webserver has PHP5 installed too.
I have to apologize for giving advise without being the Apache guy. If you remember
http://drupal.org/node/28371
my own web host (Apache/1.3.33, MySQL 4.0.25, PHP 5.0.3, Linux of some flavor) says the line that has to go into .htaccess is
Comment #4
nsk commentedDo you mean the error is caused because that line is not in httpd.conf ? I have uninstalled PHP 4.3 and MySQL 3.23 and installed PHP 5.0 and MySQL 4.1 using my webhost's control panel. I don't have that line in my httpd.conf and I use Apache 1.3. Every other application I use works fine, however. Should I add that line?
Prometheus6 commentedI've already given you bad advice once :-<
All I can say is I add the line to my .htaccess file in the directory I want to use PHP5 to interpret .php files.
Random thought: you're not using the cvs version, are you?
nsk commentedI tried adding that line, I restarted Apache, and everything went broken, no php script could work because the browser was trying to download it as a text file. Of course I reverted the change and now I am back to the previous situation. I use Amazon Items 4.6. The server has been migrated to pure PHP5 now, I don't run PHP4 anymore. I think that line is mostly useful if you run both php4 and php5.
Does Amazon Items 4.6 works on your php5 server? Can you import books?
Prometheus6 commentedI have nothing to do with Amazon Items. Entirely different project.
nsk commentedSorry, I actually meant Amazon Tools 4.6.
Prometheus6 commentedNo problem importing at all. Can you set up a phpinfo() script?
nsk commentedphpinfo works fine, as well as any other php script. it's php 5.0.3.

Prometheus6 commentedI was hoping to see the output, but that may do. Here's the output from my server that documents all the modules that affect Amazon associate tools:

While doing this another thought occurred to me. The day after you opened this, I committed a change to handle a bug at Amazon (all input is interpreted as ISO-8859-1) so you may want to check the iconv module as well.

nsk commentedI have newer versions of all modules you listed. You can see the full output if you want, but I would need comm via email, not here. My Amazon Tools 4.6 still doesn't work :(
Comment #13
Prometheus6 commentedOkay, my contact page is enabled so you can get to me that way.
At this point I'm really curious.
nsk commentedI sent you a message with a URL.
Prometheus6 commentedSo far the big difference is you have the MYSQLI drivers rather than the ones that ship by default with PHP4...which my web host does NOT, even when I'm running under PHP5. As we speak, that driver isn't supported by Drupal.
I'm not writing this off yet. It may compel me to reconfigure things so I can switch PHP versions while I develop. I believe I saw a package on Sourceforge that can help me (Windows machine...).
nsk commentedThat's wrong, I have both the mysql and the mysqli drivers. And Drupal does support MySQLi because I wrote a support layer for it and, after the community fixes it and improves it, it will be in core in 4.7. However this has nothing to do with amazon tools, since my PHP does have mysql installed, along with mysqli.
nsk commentedBTW, MySQLi support was just commited to Drupal HEAD for 4.7. http://drupal.org/node/29910
Comment #18
nsk commentedany news? any explanation why this doesn't work?
Prometheus6 commentedFrankly, no. I can't duplicate the problem. I'm not closing this in case someone else can but I can't fix what doesn't look broken to me.
nsk commentedIn what setup (drupal, modules, php, mysql, apache, etc) do you test it? I test it on Drupal 4.6.3 with modules Amazon Items, Taxonomy Menu, Feedback, Image, Excerpt, and others, PHP 5.0.3, MySQL 4.1.9, Apache 1.3.27. I'll try to test it without other modules to see what happens.
Prometheus6 commentedYou know, you keep mentioning Amazon Items and I keep trying not to make an issue of the fact that Amazon Items is your module.
I'm afraid we've reached the limit of the free support I'm willing to provide. I know there's nothing wrong with the code, I know it runs under PHP4 and 5.
It's entirely possible there an incompatibility with the MySQLi drivers but I don't have a server with them installed so can't test for a conflict there...if one exists I suspect I'll get definitive proof when 4.7 drops in the form of a flood of problems, by which time I will may have a local system.
Meanwhile there is no further I can go. If you can narrow it down (blank pages tend to be caused by lack of processing memory) I'll look at what you find.
nsk commentedAmazon Items is not my module: The previous maintainer left and I just volunteered to try to keep it updated and help users who use it, although in the end it seems I have little time to maintain it.
As I said, the PHP5 installation where Amazon Tools runs on uses the MySQL drivers and not MySQLi.
My memory limit is 64MB, so I think it has plenty.
I can't understand what you mean in this sentence: "You know, you keep mentioning Amazon Items and I keep trying not to make an issue of the fact that Amazon Items is your module". Can you elaborate?
nsk commentedClean-install Drupal 4.6.3 on Apache 2.0.53, PHP 5.0.3, MySQL 4.1.9, with MySQLi and MySQL drivers (only the MySQL client used on Drupal): Amazon Tools 4.6 works ok without other modules.
nsk commentedit also works ok when Amazon Items 4.6 is loaded.
nsk commentedno problems with Excerpt 4.6, Browscap 4.6, Bad Behaviour 4.6 either.
nsk commentedalso tested Banner 4.6, Feedback 4.6, Hall Of Fame 4.6, Image 4.6, PathAuto 4.6, Print 4.6, and works ok.
nsk commentedI tested your module with any other contrib module I use on a fresh Drupal install and works fine. However, it still doesn't work well on my production server. The only difference is Apache (1.3 to 2.0).
Prometheus6 commentedI consider "Freudian slips" significant, especially when they are repeated. I can't say exactly what the significance is, but I remember you were looking for a configuration option to replace the developer token.
All good, open source and all that. And that is the absolute end of this particular branch of the conversation.
nsk commentedPerhaps you read too much Freud; I prefer hard science.
The fact that I volunteered to attempt to provide updates for a module which is similar to yours means nothing by itself. Amazon Items uses an old version of Amazon API, while your module supports the new API. I have to investigate the feasibility of a migration. After this is done, I have to decide what's the best solution for me and all users of Amazon Items. But now I have to find out whether your module can successfully support Amazon associate sites, which means that I must first evaluate your module under real life conditions.
You indicated earlier that you cannot support this for free anymore. Under what conditions can you provide support for your open-source module?
