Problem/Motivation

First of all: Thank you very much for this module! We liked Admin Toolbar a lot and got used to it. Switching to Core Navigation wasn't easy and still feels a bit slower in UX.

Still I'm wondering about a few things looking at this module and I'd love to learn about them and get some feedback.

If this is needed, why do we need the Navigation Core module?
Can someone tell the key ideas why core Navigation module was created (in the way it is)?
Hopefully they did a lot of UX tests before they decided to replace Admin Toolbar? So isn't this a step backwards?

Do we like this because we simply got used to Admin Toolbar?
I'm wondering if there are many good reasons why we like(d) horizontal Admin Toolbar more than Navigation? Or is it just because we got used to it?

Can we improve Core Navigation (through issues) to work as good and fast as Admin Toolbar did in the past?
Maybe restoring the old display isn't even the best solution and instead we should improve UX of Navigation?

Should this go into core (as setting) for better compatibility and not fighting (& overriding) each other?
If this module is widely used - and if it is for good reasons - I'm wondering if the implementation won't be a fight against the "nature" of Navigation. Shouldn't the horizontal display then be a setting, maybe even user-specific, where it makes sense?

Would be great to discuss all this and get your feedback - maybe even from the people who created Navigation?

PS: PLEASE don't read this as criticism. Everyone is free to use a module or not. I'd just like to learn and understand and maybe get some great results and feedback for further community work out of this.

From my perspective, this is not about being conservative or opposing change. The new Navigation locked to the left side is just slower and less intuitive to use than Admin Toolbar.

It takes multiple actions, like hover and click, and wait for reload to reach a destination, and you may even need to click some more, for example to reach a level 4 destination, like "Manage display" of a content type.

I also really dislike having any elements in the left side of the screen, which I realised when using WordPress. I find that they are very distracting, grabbing attention from the area where I am working, in the center of the screen.

I tried raising these issues in #3421969-85: [PLAN] New Navigation and Top Bar to replace Toolbar Roadmap: Path to Stable, and got the reply that a contrib module is the solution, if you want a horizontal Admin Toolbar-like menu positioned at the top.

But I would of course support if Admin Navigation's "Top bar - Horizontal navigation at the top of the page"-feature got included in Drupal core, so +1 for the suggestion :)
