How does an image become part of the "Acidfree favorite item selection" block? Is there a way to say in the UI "This is my favorite picture" or does it become a favorite depending on the number of times that image has been viewed?

Yes, currently, favorites are selected by the most viewed pictures. I don't think it is done quite right, but there are still bigger bugs to catch to be bothered by this bug.

There are currently no plans for marking things as favorites with the UI.
