Transferring work from field group issue to sandbox

@hydra thanks for creating this. Here is the same early exit solution that I put in a patch for in the field group issue. It exits early out of the plugin render function when we do not have a context available. It is the same approach taken by many other content type plugins so I think its pretty reasonable to add it here.
