there are a lot of permission UI modules around. naming some:
filter_perms
permission_select
check_heavy_ui
allperms
better_perms

are there plans to merge them together?

and what about a D7 port?

This module no longer works with D6.24, also these are Dead:

check_heavy_ui
allperms

Still living, but don't help overcome the thousand checkbox effect.

filter_perms
better_perms

Kludge way to be able to check all permissions for a role (6.24):

Use http://drupal.org/project/filter_perms and CheckFox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2393
