I am running Views 6.x-2.11, have unpacked VBO 6.x-1.9 (which is Views 2 compatible, yes?), and on the modules page, I can see VBO but the checkbox to enable it is greyed out and can't be selected. Nothing to update with update.php. Any clues appreciated.

Yes, VBO 6.x-1.9 is compatible with Views 2. Another requirement of VBO is PHP 5.0. Are using using some prior PHP version?

The problem was with Regcode module - the sub Role Assignment. I'm filing a bug report over there. Thanks for everything.
