any reason for not using php's xmlwriter extension?

No particular reason - since I was generating an XML document for output I wanted fine-grained control over the document text and formatting, something I didn't know if Xmlwriter could give me. Plus using XmlWriter would be much more resource intensive than just simple string iterations - we don't really need a full DOM and stuff. But eventually as the module gets more sophisticated it may very well use xmlwriter - if for instance the user wants to apply an XSLT stylesheet to the XML document after generation, or some complex postprocessing. Thanks for the suggestion and I'm glad you like my module.

Drupal 6 has been EOL for some years, closing all D6 issues.
