Where to start?

I know the main idea of layers with Drupal, but looking throught the massive list of building links I am lost.
Could anyone give me links for:

How do I setup a local test area for drupal?
I am a beginner, a good guide would be appriciated.

How do I try to make a site with drupal and test (preview) it?

how to set up a local test area on your local machine depends on what software you choose to use.

There are many LAMP stacks available for both Mac and Windows.

http://drupal.org/contributors-guide is a good place to start armed with google to research the different setups available.

If you want, you can use Acquia Drupal stack installer, it will do everything for you. http://acquia.com/downloads

It even allows to set-up multisites which is awesome to quickly test different settings. I highly recommend it for testing and breaking. ;)

I'm just learning Drupal, but have some Linux skills. I'm running this Turnkey Linux Drupal appliance with VMWare player.
