I have been trying to figure out what setting I may be missing but for some reason the edit>user profile link on the user page only shows up for the admin and not for authenticated users. I checked permissions and other settings but cannot figure out what I need to do to make it available to the users. Any thoughts?

Check permissions for content profile, user edit own content. This sound like a permission issue
