I don't understand why the js code injects span elements.
The extlink and mailto pngs can be added as backgrounds directly to the anchor tag.

I've included a patch that should do such.

Which now that I am looking at it, the extlink module now allows for a message to users leaving the site, which is why I wrote this module in the first place. I'll have to look into this and see if my module should be abandoned.
