The /admin/content/imagefield_import page suggests that import is recursive. However, images in subfolders are ignored during import. Be nice if they were weren't :)

This is already the default behavior of the module. Have you made sure that the folders and files under the import folder are readeable? (If they're not, you should see an error message on the import page.)

What is the current layout and content of your import folder?
