I think it makes sense to implement this. After all, if a user has this permission, he/she should be able to edit the comment anyway. Personally, I wanted to have this behavior in combination with the Forum Access module.
The attached patch works for me.

snufkin commentedI agree, as per feature it doesn't really fit, but then again the time limited editing didn't fit either. I am fine with this module becoming some sort of comment feature extension, perhaps for d7 i should start a new project so the name better reflects that.
coming back to this issue: it makes sense and the change is simple enough, committed. Could you test the dev version so I can roll an official release sometime soon?
