Either these instructions are wrong or Drush Make needs to be modified to ignore the profile itself when generating and updating the .make files form an existing install of the profile.

It's not a big deal to remove it, but would there ever be a reason to include it?

the instructions have been updated.

also, #649730: drush convert|verify makefile don't respond properly to including core or disallowed project types in the .make file now generates proper error messages if the profile author accidentally includes their profile in the .make file.
