I have created a view using views tabs but when I add content that should display under the tab only one content item seems to be displaying for each tab.

Views tab purpose, to my understanding, is exactly that; one content for each tab.

If you're looking for multiple views per tab, then this isn't the module.

Try panels, quicktabs, etc. :). I think there's even one that creats tabs for each display; that may be want you want (don't remember the name).
