A great feature for this module would be the ability to have the input title inside the input fields. Maybe a separate module for all inputs on the site?

this seems like a larger design decision left to core, or to a contrib module or theme that implements it across the board. interesting idea, though...

The functionality you're looking for is provided by a separate module. Try:
Compact Forms

With Compact Forms, you can configure any form from any module to display the field labels inside the input.
