I'm using 1and1 right now but I can't seem to get clean urls working. I don't think they offer support for this feature so i would need that, obviously mysql and php, ftp and some email addresses. I'm not sure what I would need for space (database space and web space), this is my first project with mysql so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have been using Verio now for about seven years, and I've been using Drupal on one of their virtual private servers now for about two.

They are not cheap; however, their support is very good and you get a lot of flexibility. Their virtual server setup still does sometimes change the way things need to be done, but much less so now than a few years ago.

FWIW, I haven't been able to get mod_rewrite and clean URLs working with them, either.

duztin’s picture

Oh, I really need mod_rewrite working, otherwise I would just stay with my host.

dmjossel’s picture

Mod_rewrite works on Verio now. The problem was too many (unneeded by drupal) PHP extensions loaded. Clean URLs, url aliases, and the rewriting of old-style URLs now work flawlessly. This also ended up solving a problem I was having getting Googlebot to index my sites properly.

Of course, if you don't need all the space/features that Verio offers (they are not that cheap) you could host with us-- synfibers.com is a Verio reseller :-)

We're using Drupal 4.2 and Drupal 4.3 right now, with the following modules installed and running fine:

filestore
image
privatemsg
event
notify (4.2)
subscriptions (4.3)

I have been using one for 6 month now a very good provider: linode.com
They give you a virtual dedicated server on UML with full power and 64MB dedicated (+ shared processing power) wih any Linux distribution you want( from RedHat to Mandrake to Debian) for 20$/month.
No system down so far. I am very pleased with them.
However no extra services, you do everything in your SSL prompt, and have full control with everything.
That's great for CMS like drupal.

I'm using this host for 2 years
they are very reliable and cheap

unlimited php,asp,.net,jsp hosting
unlimited mssql and mysql
unlimited webspace
unlimited bandwidth
unlimited pop3 emails
starter fee : $1.66/month

I sent these guys mail about thier services before I signed up to host with them. Its been over 2 days and I heard no response. That doesn't seem like good service to me. Are they still in business? Do they have good support?

Really, I'm just looking for a pretty full service provider that offers both LAMP and the .NET platform (under different plans obviously) at reasonable prices. I've found plenty in the $15-20/month range, but am hoping to find something around $8-10/month. I really don't need much... on the LAMP side, I'm just looking for the ability to host a Drupal site, but to be able to grow and do more things with the platform later.

Any more ideas/suggestions?

chris-at-tineb.com’s picture

I've got my site hosted on a vserver over at XQ3. 'Course I work for them so I might be a tad biased. ;-P

philoxenia’s picture

I'd recommend TekAdvantage.com. They're a small company but offer spectacular support (see their forums for evidence).

Or, of course, you could host with us, www.PhiloxeniaWeb.net :-)

duztin’s picture

TechAdvantage looks good, I saw they offer an auto install of drupal, that would be a plus, but just to make sure.... they will have clean urls enabled correct? I know I'd have to select to use them but would that be the extent of it? I didn't find a easy fix for the htaccess file, and if I don't have to touch it that would be nice.

Thanks

philoxenia’s picture

They've updated Fantastico so that there is no more problem with the .htaccess file. I've been used clean URLs on their server with no problems. As I said, the support there is great and they're always willing to accomodate a reasonable request.

By the way, I am not affiliated with them in any way other than being a customer. I'd certainly be happy if you told them I sent you...

Thanks,
Philoxenia

duztin’s picture

Hey, I did what you asked, but I still can't get the urls working, I'm using drupal 4.2.0 over at tekadvantage. Can you help me with the htaccess editing?

I don't know if you use the same username there but here's your plug

But it seems they are out of business, it shows "Index of /" and list only the cgi-bin folder.

I know a few people that use Open Source Host and have setup a couple of Drupal sites with them for others (I self host). I've always thought them a good choice because of their expertise with and dedication to open source CMS's. They will install one for free as part of account setup and they run opensourceCMS, probably the best place for demos of open source CMS's.

I've been very happy with the full featured service offered by OpenSourceHost.com.

I've since stopped self-hosting and moved to OSH in the last couple of weeks. Great service. Speedy response on support. And, I might add, the Drupal coupon is nice.

joel_guesclin’s picture

I have found OpenSourceHost.com very good, extremely reliable, friendly, and competent support. They have a real expertise in Open Source CMS which has proved invaluable on several occasions.

jimk1723’s picture

I'm also running off of 1And1 and I setup clean URLs. I don't remember having any problems with it, but looking at my root .htaccess file it seems like the only change I made was the RewriteBase, e.g.:

# Modify the RewriteBase if you are using Drupal in a subdirectory
# and the rewrite rules are not working properly:
#RewriteBase /drupal

...became...

# Modify the RewriteBase if you are using Drupal in a subdirectory
# and the rewrite rules are not working properly:
RewriteBase /

As for hosting alternatives, I've had excellent service from 8-95.com. $8.95 for 6 months of hosting and 50MB space. Great for personal sites.

Chris Johnson’s picture

I have 2 Drupal-powered sites at 1and1 and had problems getting the clean URLs to work. It was not real important that I have clean URLs, so I only looked at it a few minutes and then gave up.

I'll try your changes, Jim. Thanks for posting them here.

duztin’s picture

Hmmm I tried what you said and it won't work, as soon as I enable clean urls in drupals site config it forgets that I'm logged in. Is there anyway you could email the htaccess file to me?

Chris Johnson’s picture

I have 2 Drupal-powered sites at 1and1, and they supply some nice services. I just started using them last month, so I will see how it goes as to whether I keep using them. You are obviously already familiar with them.

I also have 2 other sites, one Drupal-powered, the other with custom PHP code (soon to be Drupalized), at another host, and this host is my favorite for great service: www.pajunas.com

Clean URLs work perfectly out of the box at Pajunas. MySQL/PostgreSQL, PHP, Webdav and e-mail included. They may be a small company, but they host in a world-class datacenter (DSL.net/VISI.com), so they've got great connectivity and reliability.

duztin’s picture

Great thanks for all the advice guys, I'll be comparing them all to see what suits me best.

Donovan@drupal.org’s picture

I am using 1and1 myself ( http://www.dillonsdomain.com ), and have managed to get clean urls working. There's a pretty good selection of how-tos and other helpful drupal-related info on the 1and1 support board. The board URL is:

http://s88567960.onlinehome.us/forums/index.php?act=idx

I found help on getting imagemagick, magic quotes, and clean urls operational from the posts on the forum.

I simply followed the instructions for activating clean URLs:

Go to your site config admin page.
Select CleanURL support enabled.
Hit save.

If I recall correctly, because my Drupal installation is within a subdirectory of the root (/home), the trick with clean urls is to edit .htaccess to reflect this. In my case,

#RewriteBase /drupal

had to be changed to:

RewriteBase /

I also addressed the magic quotes problem by simply creating a php.ini file with the following contents and placing it in my Drupal subdirectory (/home in my case):

magic_quotes_gpc=off

Overall, after discovering the support board, my experience with 1and1 has been very positive. You might want to try posting on the support board if my suggestions above do not work for you. I have found the moderator to be very responsive, and the community very helpful.

For the sake of full disclosure: I am using their free (for 3 years) professional hosting package. However, if their service was bad, I would say so without hesitation.

I hope this helps.

duztin’s picture

Ok that did it, Thank you so much, I've been trying to fix this for a week now.

Time to cancel that new hosting plan ;)

Donovan@drupal.org’s picture

Glad to help. So far, I am thrilled with 1and1's free hosting plan as I have been able to accomplish everything that I set out to do.

khaoohs’s picture

I have edited my .htaccess file to "RewriteBase /", enabled cleanurls within drupal, but it still does not work. I receive a 300 multiple choices error

Thank you

Donovan@drupal.org’s picture

You must enable Clean URLs in Drupal -- not on 1and1.com. Just go to Administer -> Configuration, then select "Enable" from the Clean URL drop-down menu (about 1/2 way down the page). You must also follow the instructions posted above to configure other site settings.

khaoohs’s picture

Thank you very much for the help. I was taking your .htaccess config too literally, changing my "RewriteBase /drupal" to "RewriteBase /", when it should have been pointing to the directory where drupal resides. *sigh* Anyone else with this problem, make sure you point the Rewritebase to the actual location of your drupal directory within your directory structure.

I use PEHosting and I'm very happy with them. Their prices are great and their support is excellent. I had 3 separate accounts, which I just changed to a single reseller account.

I thought everyone had a DSL line, a RedHat box, used dynamic dns (dyndns.org) and hosted their own site. I am not trying to be silly, I really thought that.

dmjossel’s picture

For personal sites, one could probably get away with that.

If one was offering subhosting, or hosting sites for clients, it would be a bad idea. Generally you'd probably have no redundancy on a setup like that-- not to mention that you'd probably be in violation of your DSL provider's TOS by hosting a server.

Box looks good, I like the way they have set up support forums and a ticket system. This is what attracted me to MNA Hosting, but unlike Box, they don't actually use it, they have outages that last for days (including email), and they never answer their phone!

I'm looking for good hosting providers in the UK, apart from Box, any others that are recommended?

But I also use www.dreamhost.com for third year now - they really rocks! No major issues and support just nice! I'm hosting few drupal sites with them (say www.baidak.com)

http://Tekadvantage.com Still there. Great service. Small company but in a top data center.

http://Site5.com I have had my main account there since 97. Never left em, and I highly recommend them.

I have also had accounts at flexihosting.net, budgethosting.com, powweb.com. Not bad, but eventually something comes up, and having great service the one time you need it is awesome.

If you aren't headed for a dedicated box, contemplate site5.com (They also have a fantastico installer for Drupal) They also use NetAdmin which I like better than CPanel.

Hi yrret, How did you get clean URL's enabled in your site5 account? I'm with site5 and can't get clean URL's or the PATH working on drupal 4.6.

I'm with site five (only about a month now) and clean urls/mod_rewrite should be enabled by default. If it's not working, send support an email with your server's name and they should get it working for you.

harald.walker’s picture

I am with Pair since 8 years now. Never had any technical problems or serious downtime and if you need support, they usually react within 24 hours. The performance of their web- and database servers is good and they have a good account control interface with all your settings. Pair is also supporting various open source projects.

If my website traffic increases a lot, then the next step would be a dedicated server in a rack at a local provider.

jiangxijay’s picture

I have been very happy with PAIR, too, but I can't get the IMAP functions in Mailhandler or Listhandler working.

http://drupal.org/node/15020#comment-36170

Do you have Drupal running on PAIR?

pbowyer’s picture

I recommend Fluid Hosting or Quadra Hosting (the latter was set up by a founder of the former, who is himself a keen PHP developer). They're not the cheapest around, but they are always willing to install extra PHP modules or other libraries if it's missing on the server - something other hosting companies I have dealt with have been unwilling to do.

I also wouldn't consider a host who didn't supply ssh access - it may be less secure (someone with know-how on a weakly set up server can access your files) but for sheer ease of maintaining sites and making quick changes nothing can beat it!

Dedicated/VPS would be nice, but is a bit pricy for me. I still am shopping around for other hosts, as more bandwidth/disk space and unlimited domains for the same/less price would be very useful (small clients take up such a small bit of space it's a shame not to be able to host lots of domains on one account!)

javanaut’s picture

I've had fairly good luck running my sites on a virtual server at http://jvds.com/ (formerly known as http://65535.net/). Their servers start around $20/mo, and you can add hardware ala carte. With root access on a Linux or BSD system, you can do just about whatever you want with your server. They even have support for your OS, so even though you're root, you're not completely out in the cold if something goes wrong.

I'm too much of a control freak to not have root access, so this arrangement works great for me.

I've recently looked into PHP hosting sites, and some have already been listed, but here's a few that I saw:

http://pair.com/
http://dreamhost.com/
http://phpwebhosting.com/

rshannon’s picture

I use two virtual private server (VPS) instances, the first from MonsterHosting, which allows the most complete control of everything I have seen in any VPS service, including details like Apache build configs, EXIM configs, complete Fanstastico installs and of course, complete SSH root access. In addition to the cPanel Web Host GUI and SSH, I use Webmin.

I also really like VPS service from OpenHosting.com, in part because they are very good about keeping the software updated (latest Apache 2, etc.) and their service is excellent. You can also use non-standard web servers or other apps, like Zope, and aren't limited to a LAMP environment -- if you don't want to be. The UserMin interface they provide is minimalistic, but once you load up full Webmin along with the SSH... what more do you really need? :-)

It's nice to see others mentioning Dreamhost. I'm hosting two Drupal sites, a Mambo site, a gallery site and a static site with Dreamhost. (The one linked below is my first Drupal site.) Personally I love these guys. They're fast, solid, well supported, running on open source servers, and pretty seasoned in dealing with the kinds of things a popular site can face. When I was deciding on the first leap into a CMS, I discovered that they do not support mod_perl in shared hosting plans, so that decided me to forget Scoop for the moment and try Drupal, and now I'm not looking back.

If you do go with DH, something specific to Drupal installation: Be sure to disable PHP-CGI in your webpanel. My first installation ended up being a nightmare with their CGI global. But I've had no problems running as an Apache module. You do your MySQL setup in the webpanel (allow an hour or so for the setup to "take" on the system), but you do the actual db install via ssh or phpMyAdmin. The user forum there is kind of quiet, but there are a couple of threads with specific info for the SQL part of Drupal installation. Their knowledgebase is quite informative.

$20/month gives me 7 domains, oodles of subs, e-addies, unlimited aliasing, unlimited mysql dbs, unlimited conueries, tons of webspace and enough bandwidth to handle just about anything, though I've not been slashdotted, so there's that unknown. (No, I'm not an owner. But if you go with them, please tell them mediagirl sent you. If you need install tips for DH, let me know. I'll be happy to help however I can.)

TMLP (Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant). They're a local power company who expanded to internet service around the time of AOL 2.0. When fiber started coming out they laid it around town before the lawsuits were filed against public municipalities running ISPs, so they are grandfathered into the system. I have almost unlimited bandwidth (not quite but not enough people visit my sites to make it an issue) and their support is awesome. Cheap fiber access ($170~ a month for way to much bandwidth) plus really good support The server is my own and is a little on the slow side since I can't afford a new one. I piggyback on a client's access so that's why I have access. I recommend looking into local municipalities if you have to oppurtunity, they generally treat you better and are often on a first name basis with customers. Plus, if they're not doing what you'd like, you can vote them out! Unfortunately the industry has successfully lobbied against this in many states. Remember, running your own server is great, but if it breaks, you can't blame it on anyone else.

I find their greatest strength is the amazingly fast responses to any questions. All my questions have been responded to within 10 minutes and often far less. This is not uncommon given responses by other BlueWho users on their publicly available forums. An example of their great support is that they moved all my sites from my previous provider as part of their standard service.
