Have you thought about:

1. converting your SMF forum to PHPBB (http://www.google.com/search?q=smf+site%3Aphpbb.com)
2. converting your PHPBB forum to Drupal (http://drupal.org/project/phpbb2drupal)

It took me an afternoon, but I did it with few problems.

Tip: make sure on your new PHPBB and Drupal install that the users' signature field allows the same or more characters than the signature field in your SMF and PHPBB forum. Else, you'll lose some signature data. That is, if you are allowing users to have 100 characters in their signature and your PHPBB or Drupal install only allows 80 characters, then any signature longer than 80 characters will get truncated.

Is there a way I can convert my phpBB to Drupal 5.0 beta2? The converter above doesn't work with this combination...

Try SMF to PHPBB to Drupal 4.7 to Drupal 5.0.

I am going to attempt this; currently using SMF with TinyPortal and want to move to Drupal. (Only forum info is important)

Just curious if anyone had successes or trouble worthy of mention.

Thanks

See my post above about converting SMF to PHPBB to Drupal.

As a matter of fact, I just converted a TinyPortal/SMF forum to PHPBB to Drupal. The forum had over 200 users and 10000 posts.

I had a hard time getting the SMF to PHPBB script to work on a Dreamhost server. I ran the script on one of my MediaTemple servers and it handled the script just fine. I believe this Dreamhost server didn't have enough memory for that many forum topics.

I would recommend anyone who is running SMF to NOT convert to Drupal's forums. You will lose about 75% of your regular forum attendees, along with 75% of your forum's functionality. I am actually looking for a way to convert a forum from Drupal to SMF (a much nicer, more robust, easier to manage forum) right now. Any help in this direction would be wonderful.

I
am running a SMF site and I'm really thinking to cnverting it to Drupal for the following reasons

-I don't want our site to be just a simple "forum"

-I want our site to have a forum, to offer each member a blog, to be able to change the frontpage layout and many other features.

-I want our site to be able to have a tagcloud system

-I want our site to be google friendly (my sites made in Drupal get 75% of visits from searchers, while our site with SMf gets just 30% from searchers)

SMF is definitely a great software and is probably the best forum software. However, if you want to think on future, and if you want your site to grow up, it won't be enough.

David.
