How can I get the catalog page into a custom view? IE I want to have the catalog appear between the sticky promoted to front page content and the river of "promoted to front page" unsticky stuff.

This is probably best done by building two views and making them blocks and assigning them to the /catalog page.

View one - node published, promoted, sticky as filters with sort assending down and then display 2-3 teasers
Put that block above the content

View two 0 node published, promoted, as filters with sort assending down and then display 2-3 teasers
Put that block below the main content
