I did not see a "read forums" permission to allow the forums to be private.

We had this problem over on our drupal test site - http://test.unreal.ie
Tried everything from Organic groups to ... well, I dunno, Pug was the one who did it ...
Eventually we gave up and I just wrote a forum module :)

It's not everyone's cup of tea though, so dont' expect it to be your magical cure for everything forum-like with drupal.

Yup this one drove me nuts for about a week, I tried every combination of security modules I could find but nothing would work the way I wanted it to, gave up in the end. If anyone else has an answer I'd be interested to hear it.

I think that if you are going to have a site with active forums drupal forums are not the best solution -- yet. Unfortunately I am not a programmer I am a Drupal implementor so I need other solutions which work with drupal.

My solution was to use Vbulletin (commercial product) and drupal together using the Vbulletin/Drupal plugin for Vbulletin. This way Vbulletin handles user permissions and forums.

zoro's being very modest. I've been reading about his module for an hour in the forums. It's apparently very good and released only on Jan. 1 or so. everyone interested in this should definitely check it out. Let's keep getting feedback on this module.
