Trying several different themes (Pixture Reloaded is my current) I cannot get images to show up in Side Content. If I add text above or below the IMG tag, then the block will appear, but with no image. If I include no text, just an image, then the block will not appear at all.

I couldn't reproduce this bug.

Probably to do with the Input Format you selected for the Side Content field, maybe it's using a filter that is stripping out images?

Exactly right. I figured this out and should have deleted this issue. Sorry to bother you with it.
