Checkout http://drupal.org/project/nodereference_explorer, along with http://drupal.org/project/modalframe and http://drupal.org/project/noderelationships

Or you might try http://drupal.org/project/popups, which is a module I liked a great deal, but as of late has not been actively developed and one of its best features as a UI no longer works with the latest version.

Node Reference Create is a stable replacement that is compatible with 6.x. Popups: Add and Reference is also another nice solution currently under development but is significantly more complex.

Setting status to "won't fix" to reflect the probable future of this module based on its history, as best as I can tell. This module was quite a trail blazer.
