Needless empty space when going linear under normal layout

When using normal layout and narrowing the window the content block slides down under navigation block and site design will be linear (no parallel blocks). That's super. But is there a point in having content block with width of some nn percent of the window width, although in such a linear view it could well be 100% of the window width?
