I experimented a little with Galleria and it seems no matter how many images I add to a gallery, ALL their thumbnails appear on the node page. Is my obseravtion correct?

If yes, that's a little disturbing, because it is perfectly normal to have tens or hundreds of images in a gallery. In that case the space taken by the thumbnails will be a lot more than the space taken by the currently displayed image.

Would it be beter to have only a strip of several thumbnails only, that scrolls left and right as opposed to all thumbnails visible at any moment?

Yes, your observation is correct, and it's the way the original plugin was designed to work. You shouldn't have hundreds of images.
