I'm just evaluating geo modules and noticed Google Maps Tools and was wondering how it differers to GMap Module. It's always a shame to see two developers working separately to achieve the same thing and I thought someone might be able to shed some light.

I was looking at going with GMap module because it's much more mature and integrates with other modules. However on the project page of Google Maps Tools it states that Google Maps Tools "tries to be as Drupal-like as possible" and suggests that GMap Module isn't

After almost a year of using this module I can safely close this issue :)

Would you mind to share some of your findings?

Haven't used Gmap in a while as I posted this 2 and a half years ago but I will be using it in the next couple of months.

Google Maps Tools used to mention it "tries to be as Drupal-like as possible" and suggested that Gmap module wasn't. This was actually incorrect the Gmap/Location module does contained some legacy code that embeds locations directly on the node but it also contains updated code that just uses CCK. Plus for Drupal 7 the 4.x module will be based on the FieldAPI as mentioned on the project page "Location 7.x-4.x is in the works and it is a full rewrite to use fields API for everything."

I can't remember my original review of Google Maps Tools but I decided to go with Gmap and will continue to when I get back to handling geo data because there's so much community support for the module when compared to Google Maps Tools, there's 30,000 sites using it and therefore higher chance it will receive integration with other modules in the future which is important to me.

Thanks for the update! This confirms my observations, but still the Gmaps claims from the project page sound incredibly good ;)
