WriteAlt helps Drupal site owners generate useful alternative text for images and improve image performance directly inside the Drupal Media workflow.

Post-Installation

After enabling WriteAlt, go to Configuration → Media → WriteAlt settings. Add a WriteAlt API key, select the generation language and writing style, optionally add keywords, and save the settings.

Grant the Use WriteAlt permission to the roles that should generate alt text or optimize images. Users also need permission to update the relevant Media items.

Open the WriteAlt tools from the administration menu or use the Generate alt text and Optimize image buttons on Drupal Media upload forms. Generated text is inserted into Drupal’s native Alternative text field and must be saved with the Media item.

• Drupal 10.3 or Drupal 11.
• Drupal core File, Image, and Media modules.
• A WriteAlt API key.
• Server access to the WriteAlt API.
• PHP GD for image optimization.

Recommended modules/libraries

No additional contributed modules are required. Drupal core Media, File, and Image modules are required.
