This is a procedural function in node.module that can be deprecated in favour of an OOP API.

This function is unused by core and searching for it in contrib only brought up calls directly to ->getDescription

That sounds masochistic 😅 I'd rather bite sized chunks that don't get knocked back for being too large in scope.
