The included README.txt applied only to freelinking.module, not Install Profile API.

It would be helpful if the Install Profile-specifical README.txt file included a description of the subdirectories ("contrib" and "core") and how one should add additional profiles (e.g., CCK Date Testsite).

Already fixed in DRUPAL-6--1 branch: http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=154747

Instructions on install profiles are out of scope for this README.txt file.

I'm not sure a description of core and contrib is necessary... the README.txt says how to use it in an install profile, so profile builders know what's going on. End users shouldn't need to do anything at all with this module, in fact.

dww: Understood. After filing this issue, I dug into the documentation on installation profiles, which is unfortunately sparse. Of course, this is an issue for core documentation, not this module.

I've just downloaded install_profile_api-6.x-1.2-beta2 and the readme.txt doesn't refer to install profiles at all, rather it talks about the freelinking.module

So it seems to have completely the wrong readme.txt!!

Yes, exactly. But if you download 6.x-1.x-dev it's already fixed. So, it'll be fixed whenever 6.x-1.2-beta3 or 6.x-1.3 (or whatever we call the next official release) will be released.

Ah right. I (wrongly) assumed that since this message, the recommended official release as listed at http://drupal.org/project/install_profile_api had everything working correctly.

Might it be better to amend that page to better reflect the current situation?
