underlined or strikedthrough text doesn't seem to be possible

It looks to be a limitation of the GD library, but I wasn't able to find a way to output an image with the text being underlined (italic, bold are different fonts, but underline is a variant of the font)

Just to let you take the right decision before deciding to go for this feature.
