Add Olivero-like primary navigation to Starterkit theme

i would like to bring up the toolbar style update plus the active toolbar tray issue which go hand in hand. both issues are a bit stalled at the moment. there is a need for a design and consensus in regards of a11y concerns in the context of the active toolbar tray issue that was discussed a few weeks ago during an a11y office hour. and derek (@dww) tried to foster a discussion in the issue. just thought i bring the topic up in a meeting here to discuss and bring it back on the map. i think with claro now as the new default admin theme and also the adjustment of the styling of the installer to the claro designs it would be good to discuss and move those two issues forward as well?

Japan I think.
mherchel
Maybe when I went to Austria?
katannshaw
Austria is gorgeous.
mherchel
it was seriously badass
javi-er
Vietnam! in total it was a 40 hours travel from south america with all the airplane switching, with several time zone changes in the middle
katannshaw
Yikes! Ok you win.

Japan
rkoller
Kasachstan (coming from germany). but i guess 40 hours travel is hard to beat :D
dww
Single flight: Chicago to Tokyo (16+ hours?)
Single trip: flew all the way around the world one summer (combo of work, family and other visits): Chicago, UK, Italy, Egypt, Taiwan (Cairo to Taipei was the longest travel day, but split up with stops / connections in Dubai and Singapore), SF, then finally back to Madison, WI (where I was living / working at the time).

nice!
katannshaw
Wow, lots of great places and lots of hours.

TOPIC 1: Twig debug output does not display all suggestions when an array of theme hooks is passed to #theme

This one is one of those #drupalWTF's that get you. This is the issue of why Views templates don't show up in the theme debug
mherchel
and it also doesn't show the |as filter work that we're showing
mherchel
the issue is set to Needs Review, but evidently the code that it touches is pretty scary. It could affect a lot of different things, so @lauriii wants some testing.
mherchel
Specifically, if you can test the patches (locally) with real world theme implementations and see if anything breaks
mherchel
If we could get that one committed, it'd be a really really nice fix

TOPIC 2: Add Olivero-like primary navigation to Starterkit theme

This is one that i've been putting in some time on, and it's going great...
mherchel
the question is what do people want out of a basic navigation. Currently we have a desktop nav that has dropdowns (similar to olivero) and also a similar mobile menu (where it slides out from the right)
mherchel
the goal for this is to be an accessible start
mherchel
with the knowledge that almost all menus are bespoke
mherchel
but if people want to go in and checkout the MR and start poking at it, it'd be really nice

Both these issues are really long. what needs to be done?
dww
TL;DR: we desperately need the core design team to discuss this with the #accessibility team, especially
@andrewmacpherson, to come up with something mutually agreeable. It’s been extremely slow and difficult to try to foster discussion independently in each side of the problem: folks from design don’t like the accessibility proposals and vice versa. I’m not able to effectively play “operator” and passing concerns back and forth. Once there’s agreement, happy to implement the plan, but I’m out of steam to keep trying to build consensus async.
dww
Basically, I’ve been approaching the active toolbar tray issue as the accessibility bug it is, but we haven’t found a solution that’s both sufficiently accessible and approved for the design gate.
rkoller
ah dww was fast with typing. yep the active toolbar tray is the main problem and the design there is an agreement on has to be worked into the toolbar style update. the toolbar style update issue for itself is close to be done it seems.
mherchel
Lets set up a meeting at some point to specifically discuss this. I know Cristina Chumillas is on a well-deserved vacation. But who else would be mandatory?
mherchel
Also, I'm not sure of Andrew's availability (he's been off and on). Would another accessibility maintainer suffice?
dww
Yeah, locking Cristina and Andrew in a room for 10 minutes would solve it.
mherchel
lol
mherchel
I'm setting a reminder for two weeks from now to try to get this set up
mherchel
@andrewmacpherson: are you going to make it to Prague? I know Cristina will be there (so will I)
mherchel
and I'm pretty sure we all owe you some drinks
Mike Gifford (CivicActions)
I’m happy to be involved if we can find a time.
mherchel
Nice!
dww
Time zones permitting, happy to be involved, but definitely don’t block the meeting on my schedule.
Also, starting Friday, I’ll be completely offline until Sept 5th. so if y’all come up with a plan before then and I don’t immediately implement it, that’s why. :joy:
mherchel
Nice! Hopefully you're going on vacation!

Bit late, but would it be possible to get a summary of what Claro has done accessibility added here? https://www.drupal.org/docs/core-modules-and-themes/core-themes/claro-theme
Georgia described it here https://digital.georgia.gov/blog-post/2021-02-25/claro-theme
katannshaw
Cristina is on vacation this week but I’m sure that she can do that when she returns next Monday.
Mike Gifford (CivicActions)
I think it boils down to:
* Larger base font size (16px) and more legible typeface.
* Careful padding and margins to improve scan-ability.
* Tidier menu reveals all the libraries, micro-content, media, documents, etc. in a neat dropdown.
* All links are now underlined
* Consistent focus areas and visual clues for affordances.
But happy to have that be corrected or added to. Ultimately though this list should be easy to find.
katannshaw
Tagging @ckrina for when she returns.
