Just leaving a note here in case anyone else runs into the same problem.

Autoassignrole does not work when Logintoboggan is enabled, I have not yet debugged the issue but will post back here when I do.

Logging back here: logintoboggan does a whole bunch of things to the user_register form including its own form processing, I was only using logintoboggan to set a destination after login, so I am disabling and won't be debugging further - at first glance these modules will never be compatible due to logintoboggan.

duplicate of http://drupal.org/node/317108 ... which has been fixed. Do you have some other reason to say these modules don't work together as they work well together in testing for others.
