Here's something to think about.

Check out this kind of select box:

It's already been implemented in one drupal module:
http://drupal.org/project/nodereference_asmselect

But I don't think there is one where you can apply it across the board, or to selects that you want.

I'm not saying it has to be done in this module, but people here are probably more interested in improving select boxes than anyone.

It is very cool, we considered it but ultimately it's a jQuery solution whereas betterselect actually turns the form elements into checkboxes.
