I guess this ticket has to be reopened, because the fixed deprecation warnings result in fatal errors in Drupal 8.x, but work perfectly in Drupal 9.x. This is due to the fact that FieldKernelTestBase in Drupal 8.x falsely exposes static $modules test class property as public and therefore cannot be set to protected in extending classes again (which is the correct visibility as seen in KernelTestBase class).

The fatal errors for 8.x have been resolved. From now on, the 8.x-1.x branch will only be compatible with ^8.8 and the 2.x branch will be compatible with ^9.
